I know the struggle!

Trust me when I say that I was in your shoes with my first baby! I remember looking up my favorite photographer’s prices and thinking WHOA! How am I going to pay for that? So, for a split second I thought maybe I could do it myself. I already had a decent camera; I was already taking photos of people. The more I thought about it, I realized I didn’t want to stress over it. I am so glad I chose to leave it to a professional because during that newborn session I realized how much actually goes into taking newborn photos. Trying to do them yourself is not only unsafe but will also be very disappointing. Even after being a newborn photographer for years, I still had someone else do my own newborn photos because it is hard on the body and mind.

Safety of newborn photography

Newborns are so little and fragile. They can’t support themselves at all. The poses you see online are thought out and a lot of them are two photos made into one because of the support you must give the baby. Each pose requires training and knowledge on how to support them. It took me many years to learn how to pose, newborn cues, and adjust when needed so that their heads are always supported. Babies move and jerk unexpectedly, if they are not properly posed, they can put themselves into an unsafe position.

Quality of your photos

The reality is phone photos will never be able to replace a camera. The quality just isn’t the same. They are great for everyday memories, but they will never give you that timeless image that will last a lifetime. So much goes into a professional photo such as lighting, angles, color tone, and pixel quality. Professional equipment will simply capture your newborn in the most flattering way. Even if you bought all the equipment needed, it takes time to learn, not to mention newborn photos are one of the hardest genres to learn.

They Grow Fast

Newborns don’t stay newborns for long. They are only sleepy and curly for about two weeks. After that they are more curious about this bright new world around them. By the time you figure out how to work all the fancy new equipment, angles, and how to edit, your newborn won’t be much of a newborn anymore.

Knowledge you need to have

Professional Newborn Photography isn’t something you just fall into. It’s not just taking a photo. It’s creating an environment that the newborn in comfortable in, knowing when the baby needs a break, and not pushing a pose. It’s about having safe props, fillers, and making the whole process go smoothly. As you know from a previous blog post a lot of preparation goes into setting up a newborn session.

It has taken many years to get my process down. I have tweaked every detail. Learned from professional newborn teachers. I have learned how to safely pose so every newborn is safe and comfortable. I have learned how to use light, composition and color so your baby looks just as perfect in the photos as they do in your arms. The experience a newborn photographer has cannot be learned in a weekend.
