Newborn Session Workflow

I have a lot of people ask me what happens at a newborn session. Most people don’t realize that newborn sessions are typically between 3-4 hours long. I thought it would be fun to explain what unfolds from start to finish.

I have parents arrive to my studio at 9:30 AM. Fun fact: Newborns have a witching hour which is when they sleep best and deepest. For most babies this starts at 10 AM. After they arrive, I have the parents feed their newborn one more time to ensure they will be content and sleepy, which helps with posing.

Once your newborn is settled, I gently take them and start posing them on my posing frame. This frame allows me to position your baby safely and comfortably, which is where I will pose them in all those adorable curly newborn poses. These poses are the most popular because I’m able to capture the details, the rolls, and your babies unique features. I typically do about 3 poses during this part of the session.

Next, we move onto props. I have a large selection of specialized props that are built for the purpose of newborn photography. From tiny beds and baskets to soft blankets and wraps each chosen to compliment your newborn and vision for the session. Typically, I like to do a mixture of wrapped poses and outfits. If your baby happens to be awake during this portion and wont settle after a feeding, I opt for wrapping techniques that settle your newborn into a deep sleep and create beautiful images.

After the individual portion of the session, we move onto family portraits. If your newborn has siblings, I have dad or another family member bring them to the studio at this point. This allows the siblings to come in at their best energy. Once we have completed the sibling photos, we move onto photographing mom and baby, dad and baby, and then both parents together.

If your newborn does have siblings, then I will incorporate them and we will do a few whole family shots. I love to get individual shots of both mom and dad with all the kids and newborn, creating a variety of beautiful photos that showcase the bond between family members.

Throughout the session I create an environment that is relaxing. You don’t have to do anything. You can bring a book, set your feet up and know that I will have the rest handled (even the dirty diapers).

My goal during the session is to create memories that are frozen in time for years to come. I pay attention to every detail, from lighting, to posing, to the adorable facial expressions your baby is making.

A newborn session with me is an experience that will give you a much-needed break with a beautiful outcome. By carefully planning each step and creating a comfortable space, I am ensuring you will have a stress-free session. I look forward to capturing these beautiful moments for you.
