Every newborn session I do has a different story, not one is like the other. This particular session has stuck with me for a long time, and I feel it’s about time I talk about it. Since I photographed this family’s maternity session, I knew it was going to be meaningful. We talked about many of the ideas that included honoring a family hero, love, and loss that has made them all who they are today.
Mom told me about her grandpa recently passing and how much he meant to her and the entire family. She told me about how he had been a firefighter and they had his helmet still. I knew this was something we had to incorporate. It was such a simple way to honor him and connect her grandpa to his great grandson. I love these types of photos because they become beautiful family heirlooms.
Another detail about him was that he loved comic books and was a big superman fan. I was incredibly happy to tell more of his story through this momma’s beautiful baby boy. We wrapped him up in a soft blue wrap, added a red cape and an “S” on his chest. I must admit, themed shoots are not my typical style but I was intentional about keeping it simple, so they could enjoy the timeless feel of these images’ years from now.
This sweet baby boy was also a rainbow baby, so of course I wanted to honor this family’s journey. I knew it was important to do this in a way that again was very simple but also showed the emotion behind it. I posed him in a cute little rainbow bucket, simply added some delicate felt hearts, and used a soft rainbow wrap. Each thing I used was subtle but full of meaning for this family. I am always intentional when it comes to the sentimental details and never let it look overdone.
Every newborn session comes with its own challenges, and this one wasn’t any different. He took some time to settle into each pose, needed mommy snuggles, and lots of milk, which was completely fine. I have plenty of time built into my newborn sessions for exactly this reason. In my studio, babies lead the way, and I never rush them.
This newborn session is a true testament of how I work with families to create images that are beautifully sentimental. I have a specific style that keeps every image simple, clean, and timeless. Though I am more than willing to incorporate details that tell your family’s story. My goal is to easily add in those details and keep the images personal and timeless.
